As a small child I was my grandfather's assistant with the very important job of handing him tools in his cabinet workshop. Learning my way around my father's and my grandfather's shops was a great adventure for a small boy. I remember my father warning me not to use too big a bit when drilling out metal because it would grab and spin me around. But, being me, I had to find out for myself. Turns out he was right! My hand slammed into a workbench, and my yells carried all the way to the house. My mom heard me and ran to the shop to turn off the drill. From then on I resolved to only work with wood.

My career took me around the world through many twists and turns, from roofing in South Carolina, to import/export in Eastern Europe after the Berlin wall came down, to high tech consulting in the DC metro area. But none of those experiences call to me and bring fulfillment like the work I do now. The wood-turning community is more generous with teaching and sharing than any community that I have ever been a part of. Cutting into a new log, never knowing what grain, knots, and burls I'm going to find inside is fascinating in a way that's hard to explain. It brings me joy, and I love sharing the beauty in ordinary wood.
